BASANT PANCHAMI

Basant Panchami is a festival to welcome the spring season in the Indian sub-continent. Basant means spring and Panchami mean the fifth day. It is also the day when people start preparing for Holi which takes place forty days after Basant Panchami.

According to one of the famous beliefs, the origin of the Basant Panchami festival lies in the Aryan period. Aryans came and settled in India, crossing the Saraswati River. There was a lot of development at that time around the banks of the Saraswati River. Hence, the Saraswati River began to be associated with fertility and knowledge, and locals began to celebrate this festival. According to another mythology, Kalidasa married to beautiful princess through trickery. The princess once kicked him out of her bed after she learned that he was foolish. After this incident, Kalidasa decided to commit suicide. Goddess Saraswati emerged from the waters and asked him to take a dip in the Saraswati River. After taking a dip in the river, Kalidasa became knowledgeable and started writing poetry. Since then Basant Panchami is celebrated to adore Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of education and learning.

The festival of Basant Panchami, marking the arrival of spring will be celebrated on February 16 across different parts of the country. Basant Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day (Panchami Tithi) of the Hindu month of Magha, Shukla Paksha. The festival is also known as Sri Panchami in the South. It is also known as “Vasant Panchami” Vasant Panchami is known as Saraswati Puja in North India. In West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, and Nepal people celebrate it with joy. People visit temples and worship Goddess Saraswati. Art and music programs are also conducted at various places. Many Families celebrate this day as their babies’ first writing and reading event.

In schools and colleges, Vasant Panchami celebrations are also observed. Maa Saraswati idol placed in a school or college campus. In Odisha glimpses of Vasant Panchami are also observed. In Andhra Pradesh, the fest is celebrated as Sri Panchami. People of Rajasthan wear jasmine garlands on this day. In Punjab, Sikhs wear the yellow turban. Everything is colored yellow. It is a festival of kites too. Everywhere people fly kites of many colors. People of West Bengal and Odisha carry the idols of Goddess Saraswati in colorful ways and later put them into water.

The special cuisines made during the festival are Khichri: Rice and pulses, along with gram and a generous dose of ghee make up for the appetizing khichri. Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom, language, music, art, and the force of desire, is worshipped on this day. Yellow clothes are worn by people as a symbolic depiction of mustard flowers. The mustard fields bloom with yellow blossoms at this time of year. It is a wonderful festival that celebrates our country's traditions. The shade of yellow is seen everywhere, people enjoy the fest. The spring season is said as the best season.
