DURGA POOJA
Durga puja is considered to be an important festival of Hinduism. Durga puja is also known as Durgotsav or Sharadotsav. Durga puja occurs in the month of September-October. Preparations for Durga puja usually begins a month in advance. Goddess Durga is worshiped by the people to gain strength and blessings. Maa Durga was created by all the gods. Every god donated their part of power and gifted devasting weapons to make her stand against the Mahishasura. The significance of this festival is so high that it has been nominated as the UNESCO World's Heritage that needs to be on the map so that the entire world can find its significance. Goddess Durga has 10 hands with different things in each hand. Durga puja is celebrated grandly in Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Jharkhand. Durga puja is celebrated to worship Maa Durga for the entire nine days. Maa Durga killed the demon named Mahishasura after 10 days and nights of war. Many people fast for the entire 9 days. At the end of the festival, the idol of Goddess Durga is immersed in a river or water body.
Maa Durga has different reincarnations. She was the daughter of the mighty Himalaya and Menka, the prime ‘apsara’ of Indralok or Heaven. She later became the wife of Lord Shiva. She was then reincarnated as ‘Maa Durga’ to kill the notorious demon. It was Lord Rama who started the ritual of Durga Puja to earmark his victory over Ravana in the Satya Yuga. He pleased Maa Durga and wanted her to bless him with powers.
Durga puja is celebrated in different everywhere. Durga puja of Kolkata of Bengal is most famous. Colorful pandals and sparkling lighting arrangements make every nook and corner of the city and suburbs glows. Sindoor Khela is organized during immersion in Bengal and Maa is requested to come again. People wear their traditional clothes and perform Maa Durga Aarti and dance on drum beats. The tenth day of Durga Puja is known as Dussehra or Vijaydashami. Drama and Ramlila are also organized in many villages.
Durga pooja is an enormous and communal celebration, where people celebrate and enjoy the festival of Durga puja to their full extent without the care for their caste and financial status. Traditional folk dance and existing cultural performances are an in-sepreable part of this festival. The streets of Kolkata are filled to the brim with the devotees of Maa Durga, there are also many food stalls and shops. Not only Kolkata, or India or even the whole Indian sub-continent, this festival is celebrated all around the world. The festival tries to teach the devotees that good always wins over evil and so they should always follow the right path.
